SMU logoDALLAS (SMU) — In less than two months, SMU men’s basketball begins its second season under head coach Larry Brown by facing TCU in the Tip-Off Showcase at the American Airlines Center on Nov. 8. The inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference begins at Cincinnati on Jan. 1 followed by SMU’s debut in the renovated Moody Coliseum on Saturday, Jan. 4, when the Mustangs host three-time NCAA champion Connecticut.

The non-conference schedule includes a trip to the Corpus Christi Challenge on Nov. 29-30. The Mustangs face Virginia on Friday and then Texas A&M or Missouri State on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The Ponies will also play at former Southwest Conference rival Arkansas (Nov. 18), at Illinois-Chicago (Dec. 4) and at Wyoming (Dec. 20) in non-league action.

SMU will host non-conference games at the Curtis Culwell Center in Garland as the renovations to Moody Coliseum are being completed. The Mustangs host six games at Curtis Culwell, including Rhode Island (Nov. 11) and in-state matchups versus Texas State (Nov. 20), Sam Houston State (Nov. 26) and UTPA (Dec. 18). Additionally, the team will face Hofstra at Dr. Pepper Arena in Frisco on Dec. 7.

SMU’s inaugural season in the American Athletic Conference opens at Cincinnati on Jan. 1. The Mustangs then make their debut in the renovated Moody Coliseum in a nationally-televised matchup with three-time NCAA champion Connecticut on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 1 p.m. SMU fans will get a chance to see every AAC opponent in Moody Coliseum, as the Mustangs will play each league opponent twice. All 18 American Athletic Conference matchups will be nationally televised. In addition to defending NCAA champion Louisville, the Mustangs will host 2013 NCAA Tournament teams Temple, Memphis and Cincinnati. SMU will also host games against league foes Houston, Rutgers, UCF and USF.

The $47 million renovation and expansion of Moody Coliseum will be completed in December, so the Mustangs can host all conference games on campus. The renovated Moody Coliseum will provide many new and improved features, including a renovated main entry lobby, expanded concourses with raised ceilings, club seats, loge boxes, private suites, group suites, new event space, offices, team locker rooms and meeting space.

The Mustangs return all five starters while adding the No. 14 ranked recruiting class and three transfers that sat out last season. The Mustangs went 15-17 last year with Cannen Cunningham, Jalen Jones, Ryan Manuel, Nick Russell, and Shawn Williams starting the entire season. They are joined by transfers Nic Moore (from Illinois State), Markus Kennedy (from Villanova) and Crandall Head (from Illinois). The recruiting class that is ranked as high as No. 14 includes McDonald’s All-American Keith Frazier, one of the nation’s top junior college prospects in Yanick Moreira, and a pair of Illinois’ Mr. Basketball finalists from the Chicago area in Sterling Brown and Ben Moore.
